30drop records presents the first release of close encounters, the newest and the final concurrent collection of the label. four tracks, four artists and one common goal. the proposal is based on feasible, or better said, future encounters with extraterrestial beings or civilizations from outer space. the idea behind the whole work is to construct a conceptually and musically self-sufficient bundle of tracks developed by several creatives. on this case, dj surgeles, jeroen search, 30drop itself and another label s member, oryx 9, are the manufacturers of this first chapter. dj surgeles has a solid career as dj and producer with, for instance, his releases on something in the sky, the captivating and exquisite label of jeff mills. jeroen search is another well known talented producer with a large discography behind him that opens the ep with a steadfast cosmic shot, -aeon-. -umbra-, a spacey on a firm body track by dj surgeles, takes over from. on the b side, 30drop drops us to a -lunar mission- launched directly from the dance floor and, finally, oryx 9 invites us to a psychedelic floating experience on a distant galaxy -black market-. first contact ep is a massive set of sci-fi techno cuts that you should not miss it!

breaking his silence after twenty years, sebastian snoeck a.k.a sebastian s. will be the second member of belgian collective “bwp experiments” to release on the basic moves imprint. he has handed over two previously unpublished tracks made under the moniker caustic 14. after listening to “personal space invader” in 1997, carl craig asked sebastian s. to produce new material for his own label, planet e. “message in a box” and “rising star” were therefore made as a response to this request. however, due to a political transatlantic rift the tracks never saw the light of day and have since been stored on dat tapes, hidden away from the general public’s ears. if i had to describe sebastian’s output, i’d say it is most importantly energetic, positive, and groovy. it bears the mark of a certain nostalgia, shying away from the blind celebration of both futurism and experimentation in order to reach intemporality. this attempt to exist outside of time gives his productions a certain character and in my opinion his music has come to embody something i like to call “space opera techno”. sebastian s has succeeded where many before him have failed: by avoiding copycat tactics and simplified approaches to production he managed to create a singular identity. the tracks are recognisable after the first few seconds – and that’s what makes his work so unique!

amongst hip-hop fans, boogie down productions first two albums criminal minded (1987) and by all means necessary (1988) both loom very large. and for good reason: they both captured one of the late 1980s most important and influential crews at their highest powers of lyricism and musical invention. that being said, too many people sleep on bdps third lp, ghetto music. released in 1989, when the hip-hop world was truly beginning to explode and reach new heights of sales and exposure around the world, the album is arguably as powerful as the groups first two. as on by all means necessary, in the wake of the tragic death of original founder, producer and dj scott larock, krs-one pushed along mightily on the production side, with help from his extended crew. musically the sound created on albums 2 & 3 was funky, catchy, and continually innovative, giving him the perfect backdrop to build his edutainment syllabus. lyrically there was never a question about krsã power, and on ghetto music he continues to impress, teach and ask important questions. clear cases in point are two of the albumãs singles, you must learn and why is that? but he gets even deeper on lesser-jocked tracks like the anti-police thought-piece who protects us from you (still sadly relevant in 2017), ghetto music and world peace. still as strong and entertaining today as it was almost three decades ago, this new reissue is a perfect way for younger fans to embrace one of the most underrated hip-hop platters of the era.

the visionary talents of multi-instrumentalist zach witness have sprouted full life in this world, lending his sonic touch to the bulk of erykah badus latest album, but you caint use my phone (motown records). this project was brought to life with erykah badu at the badudio and world witness studios in zach witness hometown, dallas, texas. this project put him on a unique trajectory, harnessing his intricately designed fusion productions into the periphery of an entirely new audience around the world. his forthcoming debut ep, electric revival: rise of an outkast nation, is the first project to find the light of day after this expansion phase, initially created as a birthday gift to zach witness friend and collaborator, andre 3000. the catalyst behind the creation of electric revival has a very specific initiation point. during the recordings for but you caint use my phone, erykah badu called on andré 3000 for collaborative assistance. this would result in the albums last track, hello, created at the home studio zach witness has lived in his whole life. this moment in time compelled zach witness to create an offering for andré 3000, and this was in the form of an entire body of music. electric revival takes on the stories of the lives entangled around societys most crippling and hopeless of situations. the social and political intentions of the ep paints a very defined purpose in this context. experience the transformative sounds of zach witness and his debut manifesto.

one year after its debut release, in any case is back with its third record, delivering, as planned, a large organic and groovy sound-scape.this time, co-founder mal... cutouane - sorry - is taking the lead with an edit flawlessly handled , you ll find an uptempo driving beat, a collection of horns and vocals but most importantly, a killer bassline that won t fail at keeping your dancefloor tight. next to him, you ll trip on one of the newcomer to the imprint, kaffe crème, teaming up with co-founder g2s on an hybrid track. this one won t disappoint you with its funky bassline, jazzy and lush rhodes layers, horn ensemble and lastly, mellow pads and sax solo , everything cleverly arranged on top of a massive beat. this one already got dancefloor-proofed this summer and should represent a nice addition to your sets. on the other side, you ll find another new face on in any case named 4004. he worked on a mellow sounding house groove, with jazzy drums samples and a mean bassline below some lush electric piano samples. this one will make your head move anywhere you ll listen to. we ve then got the same team as on a side , g2s & kaffe crème, with a more chopped up track, blending up a disco beat and bassline supported by some house drums and jazz samples for an unusual yet pleasant feeling. closing this third adventure, manuel nie from iac002 is returning to the label with a leftfield downtempo joint, all groovy and organic sounding, perfect for those lazy sunday afternoons.

some might say jordan fields is one of the most criminally underappreciated figures to rise out of chicago in the late 90s, not for people who know what s what though. after a career spanning more than 20 years he has established himself as one of the key figures of the underground. coming out of where everything started, chicago, jordan released records on a handful of key labels like catalyst, track mode, som underground, mood groove, maffia. he did not stop there and today he is still releasing bangers having never lost that magic touch that has kept him firmly grounded on the purest form of the underground, and that, after more than 20 years is pretty much unheard of. when we first contacted jordan we wanted to go back to where it all started, we wanted to be transported to late 90s chicago, to a time where it was all about the dance floor, when tracks meant something more than songs, when purely club-oriented music was the purest form of the underground. to be honest we were not expecting to get exactly what we wanted straight away, he immediately sent us a collection of tools straight out of dat tapes he had, going all the way back to the 90s and early 2000s, so yeah to say that we are excited with this release would be a huge understatement. this is a collection of tools meant for the dancefloor, not reminiscent of some gone by era, these are the real deal, made by a true master, 20 years ago, for the future.

originally released in 1973, dream on dreamer is a fine collection of songs. it was the last album to feature guitarist and songwriter robbie van leeuwen, all the songs are written by him. the arrangements are simple, the sound is tight and the playing solid. highly recommended to all shocking blue fans and anyone who wants to hear some of the best hidden gems in rock music history.

nico nightingale, aka neud photo, is no stranger to collaborations. the new yorker s latest sees him teaming up with cristiano f. grimaldi to form intrzn, a partnership meshing a free style approach to melodies with cold rhythms. their -zone- quartet is a twilight of fluctuating moods. percussion is bare, allowing bright bars to shine and darker moments to fester. music which in one breath is elated and uplifting and, the next, dejected and downtrodden.

a story about a man separated from his group of travellers, lost in the amazon rainforest. he comes across a small settlement inhabited by people of a completely different mindset and way of living. they take him in and show him how to look at the world in an alternative way, which evokes an incredible revelation in him. he then goes off into the wilderness alone in search of his comrades, and everything is completely different to how he first perceived. this is extremely overwhelming and euphoric. he eventually finds himself at the top of a gigantic tree that stands tall as the sky, right at the crest of a majestic waterfall. as his journey peaks, he jumps from the tree into the water below. as he surfaces for air, things seem normal again. as is if it had never happened, but he knows something in him has changed. his companions are waiting at the bank of the river for him. he rejoins the group. as they head for basecamp, he realises there is no way that he will ever be able to express what he experienced that day. his journey is his own, and always will be.

time to welcome another newcomer to freerange with a brilliant debut that has already been gaining a lot of interest from early spins. stefano ritteri should be a familiar name to many, having dropped several well-received releases on key labels such as pets, rockets & ponies and get physical as well as his own monthly rinse france radio show. a producer in the old school sense, he has the ability and desire to flip from deep, emotive and down tempo jams to the most impactful, high energy floor fillers, all with a deft touch and unique and experimental spin. the italian producer, now relocated to london, has a studio chock full of vintage synths and hardware outboard which keep him inspired and ensure his output sounds fresher and fatter than most, as can be heard on this excellent two-tracker entitled a different happiness ep.

hand numbered vinyl only! frits wentink s next release on his own bobby donny label finds him editing some tracks he has been playing on his radio show for a while. they are originally by vertiqua, a german lo-fi hip hop producer that remains unknown. the vinyl only record is limited to 500 copies. all four of these tracks have been edited to make them more suited to the dance floor. the a side comes as an edit that is all about woozy chords and loose, bumpy drums with a rapped vocal stitched deep into the arrangement. it s warm and intake for cosy dance floors. the b1 has organic boom bap drums and kicks, more tape delayed chords and a nice analogue feel all finished with a wordless but beautifully soul-infused vocal. last of all, the louche drums of on b2 are coated in vinyl crackle and laced up with more intoxicating and imperfect chords. this is a perfectly aged combination of hip hop and house that will get any floor bouncing.

despite his low profile, ken karter might be one of berlin s most influential artists in the techno scene. karter is known as a mastering engineer for the seminal m_rec ltd, however his own productions have gone largely unnoticed until his 2015 ep on stroboscopic artefact’s monad series. his ep turned heads and gained him well-deserved attention. two years later, his follow-up ep on escapism exemplifies his focus on quality over quantity. his passion for mathematical formulas combined with his intricate knowledge of sound created an outstanding record set to satisfy both fans of experimental and dancefloor techno.

without new jersey native kerri ‘kaoz’ chandler, house—specifically deep house—would sound very different. ever since his teens he has been making and playing music with a unique sense of soul, jazz and deepness. from majors like atlantic, king street sounds and nervous via his own madhouse, his releases are never short of genre-defining classics that have spawned a thousand copycats. affectionately referred to as the stevie wonder of house, kerri’s dj sets take him all over the world and often find him playing live keys next to his informed selections. he’s meticulous about sound, too, which means that no-ones kicks hit quite like kerri’s. his instantly classic and timeless dj-kicks mix, though, takes him out of the club and through a world of influences and inspiration.

lumiÞreslanuit (alias lln) is glad to welcome back paris-based music composer, live performer and dj vadim svoboda for the 10th release of the label. in addition to be a close friend of the lln crew and a regular of the label’s showcases, vadim svoboda has also become a key artist of the label. indeed, it’s with him that it has all started, about three years ago, when he released his syntherapie ep (lln000) on the label. nine releases (plus one) later, we’re glad to have him again on board, this time with another format as he’s about to release his first album seed (lln009+1). seed is made up of two records: roots (vinyl 1: lln009) and canopy (vinyl 2: lln009+1). whereas roots sounds like a mini-album in the album where melodic and melancholic notes alternates with dark and strong beats, canopy seems - according to its composition - to refer directly to his syntherapie ep, even though the listener might find the same inspirations in both records.

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler—under his young seth alias— and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin’s club der visionaere in 2005. “it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.” the result, ‘deep’(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of ‘detroit after midnight’ which the pair made after “finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.” it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on ‘luiza’s inferno’ five minutes of him jamming on omar’s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it’s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers’ tuskegee label.

professor rhythm is the production moniker of south african music man thami mdluli. throughout the 1980’s, mdluli was member of chart-topping groups taboo and cjb, playing bubblegum pop to stadiums. mdluli became an in-demand producer for influential artists (like sox and sensations, among many others) and in-house producer for important record companies like eric frisch and tusk. during the early ’80s, mdluli projects usually featured an instrumental dance track. these hot instrumentals became rather popular. fans demanded to hear more of these backing tracks without vocals, he says, so mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985 as professor rhythm. he got the name before the recordings began, from fans, and positive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to invest himself in a full-on solo project. it was the era just before the end of apartheid and house music hadn’t taken over yet. there wasn’t instrumental electronic music yet in south africa. as the ’80s came to a close, that was about to change.

part three in alden tyrell s latest project: -vorm variaties-, a 5 release series consisting of tracks recorded in the last 2 years. the -vorm variaties- tracks were a -style excercise- for tyrell, flexing his producermuscle while health issues forced him to stop touring. initially he had no intention to release these tracks but we found them so good that we were almost forced to start this series. all tracks selected are variations on classic techno forms, using classic style ingredients and the 909. all 5 -variaties- are different in style, yet all homogenous, all with alden tyrell s sound signature... on point production skills and stripped down arrangements.

long time is it balearic artist max essa returns with two warm weather bombs.
first up is mekko sekko an early evening shuffler full of all max’s trademark sounds subtly charming the most horizontal listener onto the dancefloor.
top post sunset shuffler. craig bratley pumps up the bass sounds and drops an lovely vocal accent. we love this remix at iib a real fav. reminiscent of an early doors flying track the b-side is the stand alone track aestival a beautifully evocative journey from chilled out bliss do chuggy dancefloor grooving done as only max can do. great to have him back.

i think i have never met anybody, with the exception of brazilian guitarists baden powell and toquinho, as connected to his instrument as agustín pereyra lucena – vinicius de moraes the words by bossa novas seminal poet vinicius seem fit as a good introduction to agustín pereyra lucena, the undisputed ambassador of brazilian music in argentina, and a revered guitarist since his early years. pereyra lucena became fascinated by brazilian music during the years of bossa nova, a sound that would define his career despite his later incursions in jazz and french impressionism. this passion led him to drop his architecture studies and become a full time musician, forging his own sound, befriending vinicius and toquinho and sharing stage with many of brazil’s greatest musicians. released in argentina as ese dia va a llegar in 1975, and the following year in europe as brasiliana, this was pereyra lucenas fourth album. a tasteful blend of covers and original compositions, the result is a thrilling bossa jazz album with a character of its own, and which also served as the starting point of guillermo reuters career, who would shortly after start his project candeias, with agustín pereyra lucena on guitar.

the lights, the eps title track is a profound and complex story, never forcing itself upon the listener but gently picking him up in real sophisticated (production) manner. the second original track, -blckout-, is based upon a more repetitive structure. a deep male vocal, intertwining with a mystical synth-line and driving percussions gives this track its compelling energy. the b-side of the release consists of two remixes by myny and echonomist giving it both clubby structure and a beautiful-warm atmosphere.
